An electrical substation redevelopment brings together specialized equipment, construction crews and an operating environment where access needs careful attention. Spear Security Denver provided security guards during the Arvada Substation redevelopment, helping keep unauthorized individuals off the property.
Hooper’s feedback describes the value of that coverage:
“Spear provided excellent security for us at an electrical substation in Arvada while it was being redeveloped. The guards ensured that no unauthorized individuals set foot on the property.”

Project Overview: Upgrading the Arvada Substation
Hooper Corporation carried out the upgrade in coordination with Xcel Energy in Arvada, Colorado. According to Hooper’s project summary, the work replaced an existing 115 kV–13.8 kV transformer with a new 230 kV–13.8 kV transformer and associated high-voltage equipment.
The scope included demolition, new steel structures, electrical equipment installation and below-grade conduit work. To maintain sufficient distribution capacity during construction, crews installed a temporary arrangement using Xcel’s Critical Response Transformer.
Construction proceeded in phases to limit power interruptions. A demanding schedule and overlapping activity required close coordination between Hooper and Xcel Energy on a congested site.
Why Access Control Matters During Utility Construction
At a site involving electrical infrastructure and active construction, preventing unauthorized entry helps maintain clear boundaries between the work area and the public. Security personnel support those boundaries while utility and construction specialists manage electrical operations and technical safety procedures.
More broadly, a construction security plan can address visitor and delivery access, the presence of valuable equipment and materials, and how guards report concerns to project leadership. The appropriate responsibilities depend on the site and the contractor’s requirements.
Spear’s Role: Keeping Unauthorized Individuals Off the Property
For the Arvada project, Hooper specifically credited Spear’s guards with preventing unauthorized individuals from entering the property during redevelopment. That feedback provides a concrete example of the access-control role security guards can perform on a complex construction project.
It also highlights the importance of setting clear expectations for security coverage. Guards need to understand the property’s access requirements and how to communicate concerns to the designated project contacts.
Construction Security in Arvada and the Denver Metro Area
Spear Security Denver provides construction site security for projects with different access, staffing and coverage needs. This substation redevelopment is one example of Spear’s experience supporting construction work in the Denver area.
